Julius Nyerere International Airport
(JNIA) and Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) joined Kenya’s Jomo
Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in the prestigious recognition.
According to Swissport Tanzania Quality and Compliance Manager Daniel
Simkanga, it took almost a year for the firm to attain the certificate.
“We got the certification in January ...
it came with a number of benefits for the country and our customers,”
Mr Simkanga told the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam, adding: “We are the
ones who also earned JKIA this certification.” Swissport also provides
ground handling services at the Kenyan airport.
He said JNIA and KIA become 26th and
27th, respectively, to acquire the ISAGO certification, which some 250
airports have won in the world. “Johannesburg’s Olive Tambo
(International Airport) has the certificate but on passenger handling -
check in counters - only,” Mr Simkanga said.
ISAGO programme is an internationally
recognised system for assessing the operational management and control
systems of an organisation that provides ground handling services for
airlines.
The review is structured to ensure
standardised audit with consistent results across aviation businesses.
The businesses of ground handling service providers are diverse, ranging
from airside passenger transport and baggage handling to load control
and cargo handling.
According to IATA, “ISAGO audit can be
applied consistently to multinational ground handlers, as well as to
smaller companies providing services at a single station.” IATA’s ISAGO
registration scheme aims at guaranteeing safer ground operations, fewer
accidents and injuries and elimination of redundant audits from
airlines.
Other benefits are reduced costs - less
damage and harmonised standards, improved safety oversight, harmonised
audit training and qualifications.
Swissport Tanzania is a listed company
with a track record of over 30 years and is the country leading aviation
service provider operating at JNIA, KIA, Songwe Airport and Mtwara
Airport
