Innovation, skill paucity impede youth development

LACK of innovation and writing skills on sustainable projects is impeding many youth from achieving their social and economic development goals.

Tanzania Commission on Science and Technology Director General, Dr Hassan Mshinda made the remarks in Dar es Salaam during the handing over ceremony of certificates and cash prizes to winners in the writing contest of social development projects.
Dr Mshinda advised the government, social security funds and entire society to invest in social projects that have direct benefits to the society. “We must change and begin to invest in young people and on projects that have direct benefits to the community in addressing the issues of employment, health and poverty,” he argued.
He said the government alone will not succeed in addressing the youth challenges, especially unemployment and poverty, urging all wananchi to come up with sustainable projects start freeing the young people out poverty.
An Nahl Trust Chairman Engineer Alliy Kilima said innovation in project creation remain a serious challenge that his organisation strives to tackle among the youth. He said the trust started ‘Ayamin Plus’ competition to identify talents among young people in writing project proposals on social entrepreneurship.
Ten groups of Muslim youths, he said, have received certificates and 25m/- cash prizes, an average of 2.5m/- per group, after winning in the writing contest.
Engineer Kilima said the innovation exhibited by youths in writing sustainable projects that target at lifting young people out of poverty will foster social and economic development in the country.
“The goal of this project is to help young people solve their problems in the society as well as give them business and entrepreneurship skills required in the job market,” he added.
Chief Executive Officer of An-Nahl Trust Musa Nyamsigwa said the institute was founded in 2002 and is cooperating with NAMA Foundation from Malaysia in the education sector.
He explained that the two Islamic institutions offer a wide range of entrepreneurial training, business and life skills for the purpose of giving youth knowledge and best skills in the workplace and in the labour market demand
