A LEADING academic at the University of Dar es Salaam has urged Tanzanians to support President John Magufuli in his efforts to ensure that leaders and civil servants are accountable to the people.
Upon taking over the highest position on
land, President Magufuli has instituted stringent measures to weed out
corrupt and incompetent officials in the country’s bloated civil
service.
“Even the draft constitution lays
emphasis on accountability of leaders to the people. This is what
President Magufuli is doing,” said Prof Palamagamba Kabudi, a law
professor.
“We are on the process of re-writing a
new constitution, I request my fellow Tanzanians to support what
President Magufuli is doing because he is encouraging the public to
consider the rule of law,” he added.
Prof Kabudi, a journalist- cum-academic,
made these remarks in Dar es Salaam yesterday during the commemoration
of the 125th birth anniversary of Doctor Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar,
popularly known as Babasaheb, a famed Indian jurist, economist,
politician and social reformer.
He said as the nation is on the move of
drafting a new constitution, “we have to consider that a good
constitution is that stressing on the basis of democracy, justice, rule
of law and enforces accountability and integrity to the leaders and the
public in general.
Commenting on Dr Ambedkar, Prof
Palamagamba said he was a leader who introduced a system of Five-Year
Development Plan in India that Tanzania copied and is still using it up
to date.
The Indian famed politician was also the
chairman of his country’s constitution drafting committee. The Indian
High Commissioner to Tanzania, Sandeep Arya, said yesterday was Dr
Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary, a man who gave Indians the
Constitution.
“His work has been inspirational and
significant, not only to Indians but for people across the world. To
celebrate the 125th birth anniversary is to remind the world about the
work performed by ‘Dr Babasaheb’ during his life,” he said.
