THE Public Investment Committee (PIC) has ordered Tanzania National Parks Authority (Tanapa) to trim down its spending as reports show that the authority’s expenditure surpasses its collection.
The authority spent 151bn/- to run its
various activities while it collected 149bn/- in the fiscal year
2013/14. The Committee Chairperson, Ms Lolesia Bukwimba, said in Dar es
Salaam yesterday that Tanapa should also increase its revenues to
contribute more into the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Ms Bukwimba, who is the Member of
Parliament for Busanda Constituency, said the government should also
appoint a new Tanapa board of directors as the authority has for the
past three years had no board.
According to the Deputy Minister for
Natural Resources and Tourism, Mr Ramo Makani, preparations for
appointment of a new Tanapa board are in top gear and tha the new board
members would soon be announced.
"The appointment of the new board of
Tanapa had to be delayed because the procedure for appointing public
institution boards has been changed," said the Deputy Minister when
appearing before the parliamentary committee.
Mr Albert Obama, one of the committee
members and Member of Parliament for Buhigwe Constituency, said the
government should speed up the appointment. He said that Tanapa
activities should be endorsed by its board not the ministry.
"Having operated without a board for the
past three years means that most of its activities depend on
endorsement by the ministry," he observed.
The TANAPA Director General, Mr Allan
Kijazi, said Tanapa targets to submit 17bn/- dividend to the Treasury
this financial year up from 2.5bn/- in previous fiscal year.
