MINISTER for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Development, Mr Nape Nnauye, has directed district and municipal councils to ensure that they employ competent information officers and should set aside a budget for them.
Mr Nnauye made the directive during a
meeting with stakeholders held at the Kagera Regional Commissioner’s
Office. He noted that lack of information officers negatively affected
the operations of his ministry.
“We are in discussions with Tamisemi to
ensure that the information officers are given mandate at the regional
secretariat and in the councils, he said. He noted that four councils in
Kagera Region -- Kyerwa, Bukoba municipality, Biharamulo and Bukoba
District Council had no information officers. He also tasked councils to
establish their own radio stations.
However, he directed the Tanzania
Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), to monitor the exercise and
ensure that such stations were not misused or used on tribal and
religious basis.
He noted that to date there were 123
radio stations and 26 television stations in the country. Out of these
the Lake Zone had 23 radio stations and one television station.
The minister said plans were underway to
give more incentives to journalists by giving them attractive packages
and contracts. He also said his ministry was identifying cultural
tourism areas and would promote them to attract more tourists
