Stiff competition in the Pay Tv market has seen MultiChoice add
20 new channels to its free service, DStv Now, to lure new subscribers
during the April holidays.
The addition brings the
number of live channels to 40, coming a month after MultiChoice froze
its annual subscription fees as rivalry from new market entrants stepped
up.
The South Africa-based media firm says DStv Now
will henceforth deliver popular channels such as Nick Junior, BBC Brit,
BBC Lifestyle, BBC World News, Africa Magic Urban, and Telemundo among
others.
“This April, watch exciting live programming on
the go – including Express from the US series, anytime, anywhere with
your DStv Now mobile. Catch an exciting new telenovela Hush that unpacks
a dramatic tale of fashion, politics and ambition every weeknight,”
MultiChoice stated in a statement Wednesday.
The
leading pay television firm is now focusing on luring subscribers this
holiday season even as local and international companies threaten to
destabilise its market share.
African Digital
Consortium (ADN), Pan-Africa Network Group, Bamba TV, KBC (Signet) and
Zuku are offering more affordable services that are eating into DStv’s
market share.
KTN also provides viewers with select free premier league matches, which is DStv’s area of dominance.
Safaricom has also said it plans to venture into Kenya's pay television space.
MultiChoice is however keen on the Kenyan market, pumping an estimated Sh16 billion annually into the country.
It has also availed the Barclays Premier League (EPL), La Liga and the Euro 2016 at no extra cost on its DStv compact bouquet.
