Morogoro suspends two tax collectors

DAILY NEWS Reporter in Morogoro
MOROGORO Regional Commissioner Dr Steven Kebwe has directed Morogoro District Executive Director Yona Maki to suspend two officials for failure to collect taxes.

Those in the line of fire are Mr Joel Mkesela, the head of the Planning Department and Denis Lihepa who is the head of the Trade department. Dr Kebwe gave the directive over the weekend after inspecting a tiles manufacturing site which is owned by Zhang Fa Construction Material Group Co Ltd.
The site is located at Mazizi in Maseyu village in Gwata ward. The RC noted that the two officials failed to properly execute their duties of collecting taxes from the firm since 2010. He said that as of now the company is yet to pay 6m/- in taxes, the amount which is, according to him, very minimal compared to the site’s production.
“This amount does not reflect the reality. Though it’s too minimal, still you have failed to collect it. I thus direct you (DED) to suspend these two officials effective today. They are to give room for investigations,” he said.
He added that it is the investigations that will determine their fate. The DED, Mr Maki, said that they were going to instantly act on the RC’s directive and were going to ensure that a thorough probe is conducted.
He noted that in collaboration with the regional Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) office, they were going to go through the production report of the company and see if what was to be paid matches the output.
Mr Maki affirmed that delay in tax collection from the company denied the council nearly 90m/- for the last six years.
