THE Benjamin Mkapa Foundation (BMF) has raised 1.179bn/-, surpassing its initial target of 1bn/- for contribution to the national efforts towards improving health services delivery systems.
BMF Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr
Ellen Mkondya-Senkoro, said in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday evening that
the fund to be injected into the BMF’s five-year strategic direction
would benefit directly and indirectly about 20 million people.
“The strategy is anchored on pillars of
scaling up and designing innovations for better health solutions to
combat HIV and AIDS, maternal health and health systems components,
largely human resources for health,” said the BMF CEO during a
fundraising event.
The fundraising event, which went hand
in hand with commemorating 10 years of BMF, also witnessed the launching
of a new name from the former Benjamin W. Mkapa HIV/AIDS Foundation to
new one, the Benjamin W. Mkapa Foundation.
According to Dr Senkoro, the changes aim
to embrace the concepts of One Health and Universal Health Access and
that the change considered the multi-dimensional aspects of HIV and
AIDS, which entails broader health systems strengthening aspects.
She said that BMF had already secured 55
per cent of the funds of financial target by 2018 of 136bn/- by January
2016 pointing out that the fund was realized during the last two and
half years’ efforts through grants proposal application and local
corporate fundraising initiatives.
Former President Benjamin Mkapa, who is
the founder of BMF, said there was great impact in the role the Private
sector is playing in contributing towards sustainable national economic
development.
“I urge the corporate sectors through
the window of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to open up
sustainable partnerships with the government as well as with the
non-state actors to improve the social services, health being amongst
the most needy,” said Mr Mkapa
