The Employment and Labour Relations Court has stopped Barclays Bank from terminating the contracts of 21 employees in its Nairobi regional office.
Justice Monica Mbaru lifted a three month notice to the employees by the bank and instead issued orders stopping Barclays from transferring any functions of the regional office to any other location other than Nairobi until the case is heard and determined.
“The respondents are hereby restrained... from closing down or ceasing operations of their Africa regional office in Nairobi, terminating, declaring redundant or in any manner relinquishing the services of the petitioners,” she ruled.
The employees moved to court to restrain the bank from closing down or suspending operations of the regional office which would have cost them jobs.
They also wanted the court to compel their employer to declare the criteria used to declare them eligible for redundancy as the bank retained some of their colleagues.
