JAPAN, through its international development cooperation agency, JICA, has agreed to conduct a Preparatory Survey on the Zanzibar Urban Water Distribution Facilities Improvement Project.
The survey comes following a request
made by the government in June 2015, According to a media statement
issued yesterday in Dar es Salaam by JICA office, the study’s purpose is
to examine the feasibility of the project technically and financially
which aims to improve the living environment for Zanzibar people.
“This is through providing safe and
stable water supply service in the Urban West Region in Unguja island,
through the development or renewal of water supply facilities,
reservoirs, elevated water tanks and distribution supply pipes,” reads
the statement in part.
To undertake the study, JICA is set to
dispatch a mission from Japan and the official kick off of the survey is
expected today and will run through June, next year.
JICA has been supporting Zanzibar urban
water sector through 2 grant aids projects (2005-2010), total of 2.64
billion yen (around 50.8 billion Tsh) and constructed deep well
boreholes, reservoirs water pipes and water supply facilities.
JICA also executed two technical
cooperation projects (2008-2016) to improve urban water supply provision
in Unguja Island, through enhancing water supply management of Zanzibar
Water Authority (ZAWA).
However, in tandem with such
cooperation, it is observed that there is massive deterioration of
existing water facilities which have caused large amounts of water loss
during the water supply process.
This was the major reason which prompted
the Government of Tanzania to request the Government of Japan for a
Loan to repair and renew the ageing facilities.
If the preparatory study finds that the
project is feasible, it is expected that the project will be financed by
JICA through an ODA Yen Loan pending approval by the Government of
Japan
