Illovo Sugar invests in health, education

DAILY NEWS Reporter
AS part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Kilombero Sugar Company (KSC) has invested over 200m/- in the year 2015/16 to implement various community projects particularly in health and education.

The Kilombero Community Charitable Trust (KCCT) Manager, Ms Mary Elizabeth, said at the weekend that the projects that were executed in the year under review are namely the construction of two classrooms, one at Kalunga and the other at Muungano Primary Schools worth 38.5m/-.
She said before the project, the pre-standard I pupils were previously holding classes outside on the grass where they had to suspend studies during heavy rains and also have to clear grasses from time to time.
Another project involved the construction of toilets at Mang’ula and Mgudeni primary schools worth 30.5m/-. Each facility has six toilets and urinal. One of the toilets is designed specifically for disabled students.
“Apart from being among the key sugar producers, KSC also sweetens hundreds of thousands of lives where it operates, through various community programmes in health and education sectors,” she said projects will help improve the quality of education and life of children in Kilombero.
She mentioned the other projects accomplished by KSC as the construction of 90m/- girl’s dormitory at Ruhembe Secondary School that will accommodate 48 girls upon its completion thus reducing hassles of walking long distance to each school for about 40 kms daily.
“This dormitory that includes toilet and shower facilities will improve the attendance and make it possible for these girls to continue their education,” she said.
