THE Mayor of Ilala Municipality, Mr Charles Kuyeko, has suggested the need for the government to consider letting the collection of revenues under the country’s municipalities instead of handing it to the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) as alleged.
Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam
yesterday, Mr Kuyeko said that handing over the task of collecting the
revenues to the TRA would weaken the development of the municipalities
in the country. He appealed to President John Magufuli to intervene and
ensure revenue collection is handled by the municipalities.
Mr Kuyeko said that there are reports
that by July, this year, the government plans to hand over the
collection of building revenues to TRA. Currently, the matter is being
handled by the municipalities.
He noted that development of the
country’s municipalities depends on the various levies including those
collected from the municipalities’ buildings, banners and other sources.
“What is being planned by the government
over the matter (revenue collection at the municipalities) does not
correspond with the Prime Minister’s declaration that requires the
municipalities to ensure they collect 80 per cent of the revenues at the
municipalities,” he said, noting that the move will not help the
municipalities to collect a percentage of the revenues.
Commenting on his municipality (Ilala),
Mr Kuyeko said that the management has planned to collect 85b/- in the
financial budget contrary to last year’s budget that stood at 52b/-. “In
March, this year, we managed to collect 1.8b/- taxes from buildings.
Basing on the new strategies that we had
formed, we plan to collect three times the amount of revenues that we
had generated,” he noted.
