MWANZA Archdiocese Bishop Thaddeus Ruw’aichi has called for the need to empower women on sustainable development projects to enable them improve their economic wellbeing.
Speaking during the opening of four-days
workshop on building the capacity on human rights to gender and
development coordinators and their assistants here yesterday, Bishop
Ruw’aichi said that the empowerment of women should be based on practice
rather than theory.
“Practice would have tangible results to
bring positive impact to communities,” he said. He noted that organised
groups should be proactive and independent without depending on
external aid.
Tanzania, he said, has abundant
resources that can make women more independent and dependable. Tanzania
Episcopal Conference Director of Human Dignity, Cassian Lushinge, said
that the essence of the workshop was to empower women on human rights.
He said that women rights include
empowerment, land ownership rights, taking part in decision making from
family to national level and their involvement in socio-economic
activities to uplift their living conditions.
CARITAS Tanzania National Gender and
Development coordinator Emiliana Stanislaus said that the workshop
target was to facilitate capacity building for Human Rights to Gender
and Development coordinators and their assistants from 34 Catholic
dioceses. She said that the gathering would enable them use their
knowledge in helping communities implement their projects.
The participants came from; Arusha,
Dodoma, Mara, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Kagera, Morogoro and Mtwara.
Others were from Iringa, Tabora, Shinyanga, Geita, Singida and Manyara.
Dauston Severian from Rulenge Diocese in Ngara District said that the
workshop will enable participants understand the rights of women.
Ansilia Tembo of Catholic Diocese of
Mbulu said that the workshop dwelt on practice rather than sticking to
theory. “Participants have to understand the reality on the ground
rather than depending on documents on human rights issues,” she sai
