StarTimes satellite (Super) subscribers will now pay Sh1,499
per month compared to the previous Sh2,499, translating to a 40 per
cent price cut.
Those on terrestrial (Unique) package will now pay Sh1,499, a 29 per cent drop from the previous Sh2,099.
The company’s vice president Mark Lisboa said the
move was informed by the need to drive uptake of the pay TV services
through affordable pricing.
The price cuts come on the backdrop of the entry of
US-based streaming service Netflix, an on-demand service that transmits
shows via Internet-enabled devices.
Netflix offers unlimited access to movies,
documentaries and series at monthly rates of between Sh815 and Sh1,222
which are significantly lower compared to the rate cards of Kenyan pay
TV firms Wananchi Group and MultiChoice (the owner of the DStv brand).
It also follows DStv’s enhancement of some of its bouquets that now allow its subscribers to access the English Premier League.
“This is a significant development that will see
Kenyans enjoy a uniform monthly subscription fee for our top bouquets at
just Sh1, 499 which is driven by our goal to see more Kenyan households
access, afford and enjoy premium digital television services,” Mr
Lisboa said in a statement.
He added that StarTimes’ other bouquets on both
platforms will not be affected and will continue to retail as before.
The bouquets that were not affected by the change include Nova (Sh399),
Smart (Sh899), Nyota (Sh199) and Classic at Sh999 among others.
StarTimes also reduced the cost of its satellite
television decoders by 20 per cent to Sh1,999 while the full
installation for a StarTimes Satellite Television kit will now cost
Sh3,999.
