Simbachawene urges RCs to work diligently

HILDA MHAGAMA
A MINISTER of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Mr George Simbachawene, has called on Regional Commissioners (RCs) to discharge their administrative duties as stipulated in the country’s constitution.

Mr Simbachawene said all RCs have been given powers to supervise all duties and functions of the government in their regions.
“After a certain period of time we will need a report from RCs on their accomplishment, thus each must fulfil their duties instead of letting the Regional Administrative Secretaries (RASs) carry the entire burden,” he elaborated.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday during his meeting with the RCs, he said, each must be aware of what takes place in their administrative areas and make sure law and order are maintained.
The minister also insisted that RCs should be aware of who can help them solve various problems in their areas such as health and education; in addition he gave them permission to accept funds from people who would have interest in supporting the education sector.
He further said that the RCs have been appointed to the positions because the president has a lot of trust in them. He hopes they will help him in serving the people.
It’s crucial for each to discharge their duties without fear, he said. On securing funds, he said, his ministry will form a special team for inspectoral and financial tracking for them to be able to evaluate disbursement of funds in each region, even before the Controller and Auditor General (CAG) commences auditing to determine whether the funds were used as required.
Earlier, Deputy Minister of State in the President’s Office - Regional Administration and Local Government, Mr Selemani Jaffo, said it was crucial for RCs to review the revenue collection system in their regions and make sure no funds were lost.
Mr Jaffo said if each government employee fulfils his/her duties after five years other countries will come to learn from Tanzania and borrow a leaf.
He further said RCs should also supervise people to work hard, adding that performance appraisal system should be taken seriously as it was the one to guide workers in fulfilling their duties.
Director for Regional Administration in the ministry, Ms Suzan Chekane, said the RCs should use the available settings to make sure there was peace and tranquility in their region
