POOR project management is a major
reason for the delay and substandard execution of most public projects
resulting into heavy losses.
This was said in Dar es Salaam by the
Presidential Delivery Bureau (PDB) on the ‘Big Results Now’ initiative,
Chief Executive Officer Mr Omari Issa at the launching of the Project
Management Institute (PMI) Tanzania Chapter.
“The government spends substantial part
of its budget in implementing various infrastructural projects but lack
of professional project management have been downplaying the efforts to
deliver quality and efficient services to the society,” he said.
He said as Tanzania is envisioned to
realise 2025 development vision, execution of projects based on
professional skills and knowledge is fundamental particularly in the
local governments where most of the funds are directed.
“Planning is an essential component in
executing and realising timely and efficient projects,” he added while
underscoring project management for national development. Tanzania
Chairman Mr Anael Ndosa said the initiative is envisioned to increase
the adoption of project management as a profession and PMI membership
base across Sectors in the country.
PMI is the world’s largest
not-for-profit membership association for the project management
profession. He said PMI Tanzania has 21 certified members and aim to
register 30 per cent growth of membership of professionals into the PMI.
The professional resources and research
empower more than 700,000 members, credential holders and volunteers in
nearly every country in the world to enhance their careers, improve
their organisations’ success and further mature the profession.
PMI’s worldwide advocacy for project
management is reinforced by the globally recognised standards and
certification programme, extensive academic and market research
programmes, chapters and communities of practice, and professional
development opportunities.
On his part, the Chief Executive Officer
of the Oaknet Business Mr Michael Shamku said PMI in 2016 has reported
poor performance of project implementations and loss of 12.2 per cent.
Project management is driven by
decisions, often dozens or more per day. Some decisions are small and
barely noticed while others are prominent. Some require deep thought
because they involve people, resources and the environment. And
sometimes these factors are in conflict, creating a dilemma and perhaps
significant risks
