A ONE-WEEK session for the ‘Zanzibar House of Representatives (ZHRs)’ is scheduled to begin on Wednesday with its members electing their new Speaker, the House clerk, Dr Yahya Khamis Hamad said.
He said the newly elected legislators,
all from Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), will vote/approve Mr Zubeir Ali
Maulid as their new speaker, since he has no opponent.
CCM won all the 54 seats in the general
election held on March 20, this year, licensing it to control parliament
after the main opposition Civic United Front (CUF) boycotted the
elections protesting the re-run claiming that it was unconstitutional.
He said the total number of legislators
in the House is expected to be 88 including 22 members picked to take up
women’s special seats (all from CCM), the attorney General (AG) by
virtue of his position, the Speaker (previously not a House member), and
10 members to be nominated by the President.
Dr Hamad said that the deputy speaker of
the House and the chairpersons to assist the Speaker in the parliament
will be elected by the members tomorrow, before setting the date for the
official inauguration of the 9th assembly of the House by President Dr
Ali Mohamed Shein.
He said that almost all the newly
elected members have been registered and their images taken for the
Identification Cards, and that plans are underway for the members to be
briefed about the House regulations.
The new session, dominated by members
from CCM, marks a historic turnaround for the House, as since the
re-introduction of multiparty elections in 1995, it included members
from two rival political parties -- CUF and CCM)
