Mwapachu quits opposition, rejoins CCM

DAILY NEWS Reporter
FORMER East Africa Community (EAC) Secretary General, Ambassador Juma Mwapachu, has made a U-turn by rejoining his former party, the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

Mr Mwapachu, a former Tanzania Ambassador to France left CCM in October, last year, to join the coalition of four opposition political parties, Ukawa, which brought together Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo, the Civic United Front, National League of Democracy and NCCR-Mageuzi.
He was one of CCM bigwigs who crossed over to the opposition, citing “infringement of party’s constitution by the party's top leadership during the selection of a CCM presidential candidate.”
Addressing CCM members at the party’s office of Mikocheni ward in Dar es Salaam , Amb. Mwapachu said he decided to cross over to the opposition after he was dissatisfied with the presidential nomination process within the CCM.
He, however, announced that with the pace already set by President John Magufuli, he had no option other than “returning to my roots,” insisting that he is optimistic that the president will rebuild the ruling party.
“It’s my belief that Tanzania now has entered a new era under President Magufuli,” he said.
He expressed his optimism that when Dr Magufuli starts to lead CCM he would strengthen the ruling party and return it to the foundation of democracy and justice. “CCM has to return to its roots as the party of farmers and workers,” he said.
He observed that after last year’s general election he had undergone hardship in contemplating of his political fate, saying he has been in touch with the CCM’s office of Mikocheni ward on how he would return and be accepted.
