THE Minister for Energy and Minerals, Prof Sospeter Muhongo, yesterday received a report from the committee formed to examine problems facing villages surrounding North Mara Gold Mine.
Prof Muhongo commended the committee for
completing the assignment within the schedule. The team formed by the
minister himself in mid- February, this year, was made up of 27 members,
19 of them were government officials, four representatives of Tarime
Rural Member of Parliament (MP), Mr John Heche and four officials from
Acacia North Mara Gold Mine.
“ I gave you 30 days and you are done
within 30 days. Congratulations,” Minister Muhongo said shortly after
receiving the report at a brief function held at Tarime District Council
Hall yesterday morning.
He said recommendations on
implementations of the report will be announced on April 11, this year,
at the same hall. “This report combines views of citizens, the goldmine
and leaders from the sub-village level.
We will wonder to whoever will reject
it. Justice will be done to the citizens and goldmine,” he noted. Prof
Muhongo said he will go through the report before making his
recommendations on what should be done.
Speaking during the same event, Tarime
Rural MP, Mr Heche thanked residents living near the goldmine for the
cooperation it accorded to the committee. “I would also like to thank
the committee, although I don’t know what is inside the report,” Mr
Heche said.
On his part Tarime District Commissioner
(DC), Mr Glorius Luoga, thanked Minister Muhongo for forming the team,
saying that the report will open a new chapter that will help to make
mine and its neighbourhood free from unnecessary conflicts, a move that
is expected to create more chances of win-win situation on both sides -
local people and the investor
