THE government will officially launch Kigamboni Bridge on April 16, this year, the Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Prof Makame Mbarawa, has said.

Prof Mbarawa said special motor vehicles are currently being allowed to cross the bridge to measure its quality before it is officially handed over to the government. He called on the bridge users to protect the infrastructure and refrain from destroying any part of it, so it can last for a long time.
“The bridge has six lanes and is 640 metres long. We call on all members of the public, especially those who will use the bridge to be protectors of the infrastructure,” he noted.
He said the government will put in place severe legal measures against those who will destroy any part of the infrastructure, stressing the importance of drivers adhering to the road safety regulations, when crossing the bridge.
The supervising manager of the Kigamboni bridge construction, Eng Karim Mattaka said experts are continuing with measures to test the capacity of the bridges to ensure it can withstand the weight of vehicles, before handing it over to the government early next month. He said the first testing phase of the bridge has been completed and now they are in the second phase.
They will continue until the fourth phase to ascertain that the bridge meets the required standards. A total of 216bn/- was spent on constructing the Kigamboni Bridge, which is expected to reduce congestion of motor vehicles and people at the Magogoni and Kigamboni ferry.
