THE Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), Director General, Mr Joseph Masikitiko said it is only through striving for quality and standards that local manufacturers can control the local market.
Mr Masikitiko said local entrepreneurs
and manufacturers were bound to observe standards so that consumers will
go for local made brands as they will have confident in them as far as
quality are concerned.
He made the remarks during the opening
of a four day expo in Dar es Salaam as part of the African Standard Day
celebration at national level whereas 40 local firms are taking part.
Mr Masikitiko said the bureau in
collaboration with the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF), has
embarked on a special drive that aimed at empowering the local
entrepreneurs on the need to observe standard as they mobilise the
public to purchase the local goods.
Speaking during the event, TPSF
Executive Director, Mr Geofrey Simbeye said he was optimistic that the
fifth phase government would use all means possible to promote a fair
competing ground for local manufacturers and importers.
“With the trend that all manufacturers
must pay taxes and bring to an end corruption in government
institutions, local manufacturers stand a bigger chance to compete in
the local market,” said Mr Simbeye.
He said TPSF had conducted research to
know why local products were expensive in the market compared to
imported ones and they realized that tax evasion and corruption were
among the causes.
The expo others is aimed at promoting
the local products and the need to observe standards and quality to win
the local and international market.
During the exhibition a special team
will pick the best 50 top brands which will be marketed at an African
Standard event and continental free area exhibitions as a move to
promote local products.
He said was optimistic that the expo
will open up a door of local products to international markets worldwide
and encourage Tanzanian community to give priority to their home made
products.
The picked 50 top local brands will be awarded during a climax of an Africa event in which Tanzania will host in June, this year
