FORMER President Jakaya Kikwete has met with the Special Representative of the Secretary General and the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Mr Martin Kobler to review the political situation in the Arab nation.
The meeting, held in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia yesterday, was part of Dr Kikwete’s implementation of his
mandate as the African Union (AU) High Representative for Libya. Mr
Kobler extensively briefed him on his efforts and United Nations
initiatives in Libya .
“The meeting afforded Dr Kikwete and Mr
Kobler the opportunity to review the situation in Libya and identify
practical joint steps to advance peace and reconciliation in Libya,
including through the effective and timely implementation of the Libyan
Political Agreement.
“Dr Kikwete and Mr Kobler seized the
opportunity of their meeting to impress upon the Libyan stakeholders the
need to show a high sense of responsibility and statesmanship to bring
violence in their country to end and meet the legitimate aspirations of
their people to peace, stability and reconciliation,” reads the AU
statement released yesterday.
Meanwhile, South Sudanese first vice
president designate, Riek Machar, on Thursday discussed with the former
President of Tanzania the reunification process of the factions of the
ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
Chairman of national committee for
external affairs, Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth, said Machar and Kikwete also
discussed the implementation of the August 2015 peace agreement signed
between warring parties in South Sudan.
“The First Vice President of the
Republic of South Sudan H.E. Dr Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon met H.E. Former
President and Chairman of CCM Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of United Republic
of Tanzania on February 25, 2016 in the African Union Headquarters in
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,” wrote Gatkuoth in a message he posted on the
social media.
“The two Leaders discussed
implementation of peace agreement and the Arusha Agreement to reunite
the SPLM,” he added. During the meeting, he said, Machar was accompanied
by Angelina Teny, chairperson of national committee for defence and
security affairs, Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth, chairperson of national
committee for foreign affairs and Goi Jooyul Yol, SPLM/SPLA
representative to Ethiopia and African Union.
The three factions of SPLM in
government, SPLM in opposition and SPLM former detainees signed a
roadmap agreement in Arusha, Tanzania, last year to process the
reunification.
However, the parties have not come
together to finalise the implementation of the deal, with the SPLM in
opposition saying it is ready to resume the process with the other
factions
