Programme helps TMA enhance weather services development

Daily News Reporter
TANZANIA Meteorological Agency (TMA) has expressed optimism that Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Mitigation (CCIAM) programme has helped the agency to enhance capacity development in weather and climate services.

The six-year programme which kicked off in 2009 reaches its climax today, according to its coordinator, Professor Jumanne Abdallah from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA).
Speaking during a seminar on achievement on capacity building innovations and creativity in climate services in Dar es Salaam yesterday, TMA Director General, Dr Agness Kijazi, said climate change impacts were posing many challenges which continue to manifest in Tanzania and the globe.
She said climate change has impacted socio- economic sectors and livelihoods of most people, particularly those sensitive to weather and climate.
“For us to address these challenges, there is need to enhance human capacity development, encouraging creativity and innovation among scientists, so as to come up with scientific research which allows diversification of application of weather and climate services,” she noted.
She was outlining achievements attained in CCIAM six-year programme which came up with innovations and creativity in terms of developing some working tools and conducting research to improve climate services.
The CCIAM programme is a multi-institutional programme involving four institutions in Tanzania which are SUA, University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Ardhi University (ARU) and TMA together with a number of institutions in Norway coordinated by the University of Life Sciences (NMBU) with support from the Norwegian government.
According to Dr Kijazi, through CCIAM programme, TMA has enhanced its human capacity whereby two employees were sponsored at PhD level and five others were sponsored at Masters of Science level.
According to Professor Abdallah, during the programme, about 21 research projects were carried out as well as putting up enough infrastructures for climate services.
“It is now upon us to nurture lessons learnt from the project to strengthen sustainability results
