Maritime graduates urged to stick to professionalism

GRADUATES of the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI), have been challenged to observe professionalism as a way to increase productivity and speeding up realisation of the 2025 Sustainable Development Goals.

The graduates have also been urged to support President John Magufuli’s efforts of weeding out corrupt elements in the society.

The call was made by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communications, Eng. Joseph Nyamhanga during the college’s 11th graduation ceremony held in Dar es Salaam.

Speaking on behalf of Minister Prof, Makame Mbarawa, Mr Nyamhanga stressed that graduates have to be current on the various technological developments taking place in the world today to be able to compete in labour market. “It is our hope that you are going to offer positive contributions to whatever assignment that you will be assigned.

The country’s development depends on the contribution of its education of men and women,” he explained. He appealed to the college’s management to maintain the equipment used for both theory and practical training to students in order to avoid unnecessary costs.

“Government plans to put up more buildings to cater for the increasing number of students ,” he said, adding that the community should offer cooperation for the services offered by the college.

He said the government would work to improve the quality of graduates churned by DMI. DMI Board Chairman, Major Gen (rtd) Ligate Sande said that the institute plans to improve the effectiveness of the operating system to enable it produce competent graduates for the local and international job market. The graduates listed a number of challenges that hamper the college’s development.

They include shortage of instructors for various courses. Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute is an Institute under the Ministry of Works Transport and Communication established by an Act of Parliament No. 22 of 1991.

It’s a specialized Institute for Maritime Education and Training with the focus to develop, produce competent trained and qualified Maritime personnel for World shipping industry.
