Kenyans will now be expected to pay their annual Land
Rents and make land queries online following a government directive
issued Friday that also allows payment through mobile money.
The Lands Ministry said in a notice that all searches for
Nairobi Registry will only be done through the ministry’s online
platform. Other land registries around the country as well as stamp duty
payments will only be available online from March 1.
“Why queue? Make your annual land rent payments
online from the comfort of your home, office, or cyber café and pay
using mobile money, debit cards, credit cards or bank transfers,” said
the notice published in the dailies.
The registries that will be available online in
March include Kajiado, Machakos, Mombasa and Kilifi. Others are Kwale,
Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret, Bungoma, Thika, Kiambu and Meru registries.
Users seeking to sign into the e-citizen portal
will be required to log onto the website and register. After entering
your land title number and the parcel number which is found on the
certificate of title, fill in the online form and submit.
One will also be required to confirm details and proceed to pay using available payment options.
“Once the payment has been confirmed, the applicant
has the option to print the results, otherwise, the results are
available electronically in your e-citizen account.”
For the annual land rent payments, land owners
should register by sending “lands” to 21504 then dial *512# to request
amount due from Ardhi House.
The online portal also allows one to track their
application, with the ministry cautioning the public that no manual land
rent payments will be accepted after February 1.
The service is part of the government’s e-citizen portal, a one-stop site that allows access to services from various agencies.
