There are 350 corruption cases pending in Kenyan courts, lobby groups have said raising concerns over the ability of the Judiciary to resolve the runaway growth in graft.
The lobby groups said the rapid growth in corruption offences have affected both the government and private sector.
“There has been a wave of high-profile corruption scandals affecting top government officials and departments, National and county assemblies, private sector actors, and 350 corruption cases are before our courts,” read a communication from the National Integrity Alliance.
The backlog of pending cases in the courts has piled pressure on the Judiciary at a time when the country is facing a corruption crisis with the anti-corruption agency blaming the courts.
High profile corruption scandals have rocked the government. Some top officials have been sacked while others have been taken to court over various corruption related charges.
President Uhuru Kenyatta recently reshuffled his Cabinet to replace Cabinet secretaries who had been suspended over corruption as part of his government’s commitment to fighting the vice.
The National Integrity Alliance said they have organised an event to celebrate the International Anti-Corruption (IAC) Day on Wednesday.
Lobby groups under the alliance include Association of Citizens Against Corruption, Angaza Writers, the Society for International Development and Transparency International.
