EA House hails Magufuli over anti-corruption, embezzlement crusade

Mr Peter Mathuki from Kenya said Dr Magufuli has decided to fight graft, “a move that shows he is focused on bringing hope and better life to all Tanzanians’’.

Ms Dora Byamukama from Uganda said Dr Magufuli should be emulated by other East African presidents, while Mr Abukakar Ogle from Kenya said the EAC needs Dr Magufuli’s zeal to develop.


The assembly commended Dr Magufuli’s victory in the October elections and the Tanzanian public for maintaining peace and harmony during the general elections. “We commend Dr Magufuli and we wish him success in his aspiration to achieve faster development for Tanzanians.

EALA and Africa in general commends all Tanzanians for maintaining peace and showing the world that they are champions of democracy in the African region,” the report noted.
“We aso commend CCM for the trust bestowed upon them by Tanzanians and the opposition parties for providing a strong challenge while at the same time maintaining peace during the general elections,” the report observed.

The resolution, read by EALA MP, Mr Jeremie Ngendakumana, from Burundi, acknowledged and commended steps taken by Tanzania since it adopted the multi-party system.

EALA commended the closely-contested election campaigns by all presidential candidates, where peace and harmony were still maintained, showing the world that Tanzania is democratically matured.

The general elections were conducted on October 25, the fifth since Tanzania adopted the continuation of multi-party system in 1992. Since then, the elections have been conducted peacefully while the succession of presidents has also been peaceful.

Ms Mumbi Ng’aru of Kenya said Tanzania has set a milestone for electing the first woman vice-president, which she said is very good example for women in the east africa region.

Mr Taslima Twaha noted that although Tanzania has gotten the Union president out of the general election, those in Zanzibar were cancelled by the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC).

“International communities have appealed to President Magufuli to address the Zanzibar situation -- and I recommend that we add this to our resolution,” Mr Taslima noted.

Responding to Mr Taslima’s concern, Ms Maryam Ussi also from Tanzania said the Zanzibar issue was being addressed by responsible institutions.

Mr Adam Kimbisa from Tanzania said Dr Magufuli conducted his campaigns with civility, with a focus of unifying Tanzanians regardless of their origin, noting that there is a lesson for EAC to learn from.

Uganda’s East Africa Affairs Minister Shem Bageine urged President Magufuli to put in place modern infrastructure that will connect Tanzania with the other East Africa countries
