A CALL has been made for Tanzanians to invest in education with the aim of making the youth competitive and productive.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor at Mzumbe
University, Prof Josephat Itika, said during the varsity’s 14th
graduation ceremony that it was through quality education that youth in
the country will be able to achieve personal development and bring
meaningful development for their country.
“It is far easier to achieve development
both at personal level and as a country if majority of people
especially young ones are educated,” he said over the weekend in
Morogoro.
Prof Itika said the university has all
along been a symbol of quality education and that efforts are going on
to make sure that it supports the country’s vision 2025. During the
event, the varsity’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Judge (Rtd) Barnabas Samatta
conferred various degrees to 1990 graduates.
Of those, 900 were women (45.2 per cent)
while 1090 were men (54.8 per cent). Prof Itika said despite
challenges, the university has recorded several achievements and that
they are strengthening infrastructure, human resources and other needs
at all campuses and centres. He mentioned some of the challenges as old
infrastructure such as dormitories, classes, few staff houses and
inadequate water supply.
The Chairperson of the University
Council, Prof Daniel Mkude, said the university will continue to
implement the government policy of providing quality education with
emphasis on administration and management courses. He urged graduates to
become good ambassadors as they go out there. “I congratulate you for a
tough job accomplished today,” he said.
He urged them to adhere to required
social ethics and avoid corruption, prostitution, laziness and other
unwanted behaviour. He also told them to continue seeking education
through reading reports, books, and other valuable documents
