JULIUS Nyerere International Airport (JNIA)’s terminal III construction has turned to a learning centre due to its sophisticated structures. The Terminal III was visited by over 50 young engineers from various domestic and foreign universities.
The students came from University of Dar
es Salaam (UDSM) and Morogoro’s St Joseph while from overseas came from
South Africa, China and United Kingdom. The new terminal under Bam
International BV construction is at the final touches and will handle
some 6.0 million passengers once completed.
The Project Director Eng Mohammed
Millanga, who represents Tanzania Airport Authority (TAA), said the
students were exposed to challenging construction that includes roof
plate installation.
The Eng said other challenging area were
integration of new terminal with the terminal II existing systems, such
as access control and drainage system. Others were water supply,
sewage, operational readiness and passenger transfer.
The two deck airport, either floor for
departure and arrival, has three times capacity compared to terminal II
on passenger handling. Apart from field students, the construction site
also attracted various visitors including last week from Coastal
Regional Office where Eng Michael Mrema led a team of engineers from the
region office.
On the issue of safety compliance, the
Project Director, Eng Mohammed Millanga, said despite having a number of
1,500 staff on site they haven’t encountered an injury and no loss for
the last two years.
