The bank’s Chairperson, Ambassador
Salome Sijaona, said that the donation’s aim among others, is to
recognize the importance of creating an active and efficient support
system for breast cancer patients which lacks in Tanzania
.
“The bank, apart from doing business, is
much concerned with clients to ensure that he/she is healthy,” said
Ambassador Sijaona during a handover ceremony. Speaking after receiving a
cheque, TBCF project coordinator, Ms Kisa Mwakatobe thanked the
financial institution for the donation. She said the gift will go a long
way into helping women who are suffering from cancer.
She said breast cancer is the most
common type of cancer which affects women and it is on the rise in most
countries across the world, including Tanzania. “Our aim is to address
the limitations in care and support services available for breast cancer
patients in Tanzania.
Our philosophy is centred on love and
compassion and our simple goal is to create a future where no-one in
Tanzania has to deal with this frightening disease alone,” she noted.
She explained that TBCF has been filled
with many activities. Despite the shortage of funds, TBCF has continued
to work and progress on its campaign of breast cancer awareness and
education.
She added that breast cancer is the
second leading cause of cancer related deaths for women today worldwide
after cervical cancer. She noted that the Foundation will next month
organise a fundraising, their targeting to raise 120m/- which will be
used in breast cancer awareness campaigns in various forms through
public meeting, counselling, among others.
TBCF counselors and volunteers visited
breast cancer patients in hospital wards and family homes offering
emotional support, and encouragement to patients, families and care
givers, teaching them on the correct diet which is suitable for their
health.
The diagnosis of breast cancer evokes
many emotions, for this TBCF arranges breast cancer survivors meetings
to share their experiences with each other and exchange information
concerning breast cancer treatment to reduce such emotions and feelings
of isolation.
