105 held over illegal entry to Tanzania

JIMMY LWANGILI
POLICE in Dar es Salaam are holding 105 suspected illegal immigrants believed to be Ethiopian nationals for entering the country illegally.
The suspects were arrested in the morning on Thursday in a house at Tabata-Segerea area in Ilala Municipality following a tip. Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Mr Suleiman Kova, said during preliminary interrogations, the suspects confessed that they did not have any permit and that they entered the country illegally.

“The name of the owner of the house where they arrested the suspects is withheld in favour of achieving further information from ongoing investigations,’’ Mr Kova told reporters from various media houses.
According to the zonal police chief, preliminary investigations have established that the suspects were under the patronage of the one person identified as Zabibu Umwiza (25), who is believed to be a Burundi national, who is also suspected of involvement in illegal trade of human trafficking abroad from Africa for 1,000 US dollars per person.
Mr Kova said the police and the Immigration Department are checking on the linkage for further legal action. The suspects will appear in court after investigations have been completed.
On the other hand, police in Dar es Salaam have reallocated seven inspectors and other 157 traffic police officers of different ranks due to unsatisfactory performance. Explaining the decision, Mr Kova said they have been studying the concerned officers for some time and found out that they were not adequately accountable.
He stressed that he has been receiving numerous complaints from the people on officers’ poor performance.
The police commander has urged regional police commanders (RPCs) in the Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone to assess the behaviour of officers under their charge to ensure they provide good and complaint-free services to the people.
“Any police officer who would be found to have been involved directly or indirectly with crimes such as receiving bribes or breaching the force’s regulations will be prosecuted in military or civilian courts according to their crimes,” he explained.
The police commander said further investigations are underway in all departments of the force to find out if there is any police officer who lacks morals.
