The taxman will in two months appoint medium-sized and large companies—as well as state agencies—withholding agents in a move also expected to net thousands of income tax cheats.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) wants the agents to withhold value added tax (VAT) from suppliers. Up to 3,200 suppliers are expected to be recruited as taxpayers in the initiative.
The move comes a year after new laws enabled KRA to appoint government ministries, departments and agencies to the role. The taxman started with the agencies because they are the largest buyers of goods and services in the country.
“We will ask the suppliers to meet their fair share of tax and it will also be possible to detect cases where there is no declaration of income or other taxes,” said KRA’s commissioner-general John Njiraini.
Mr Njiraini told reporters efforts put last year into pushing suppliers of the government to pay tax had so far revealed the need to further assess some 5,000 suppliers for compliance.
