Italy has become the latest country to sign deals
with Kenya as part of efforts to combat terrorism, cybercrimes and
wildlife trafficking.
The new set of deals — Extradition and Mutual Legal
Assistance agreements— were signed in Milan on Wednesday by Attorney-
General Githu Muigai and Italy’s Minister for Justice Andrea Orlando.
Under the deals reached on the sidelines of the
Milan Expo 2015, and witnessed by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenya and
Italy will support each other in domestic investigation and judicial
proceedings targeting international criminals.
“Through this framework, the two states can
co-operate in the provision of support to and from each country’s
jurisdiction in domestic investigative and judicial proceedings,” State
House said in a statement.
The deals come just weeks after Kenya signed
similar commitments with the United States and China to protect wildlife
and combat international crimes such as money laundering and
cybercrime.
The latest agreements enable Prof Muigai’s office
to work closely with Italy’s Ministry of Justice in legal matters that
include extradition of suspects to face justice in jurisdiction where
the unconventional international crime is committed.
The agreements signed yesterday also will
incorporate measures to regulate and tighten controls that will enhance
the scope and definitions of criminal acts and accompanying penalties.
“Through the Extradition and Mutual Legal
Assistance agreements, Kenya and Italy will benefit from an
understanding of the relevant laws and procedures relating to the
provision of inter-State legal assistance in criminal matters,” the
State House statement added.
President Kenyatta opened the Kenya-Italy Business
Forum in which he assured the Italian business community that visa
issuance would be made easier.
The President said the introduction of online visa
application would make it easy for Italian business people and tourists
to travel to Kenya.
“Anybody who wishes to travel to Kenya can apply
online and receive the visa on arrival at any point in Kenya,” said
President Kenyatta.
The president also met Italian businessmen, including Formula One boss Flavio Briatore
