One of the two Coast-based rights organisations blacklisted on
claims of supporting terrorism has been invited for the ongoing United
Nations General Assembly (Unga) in New York.
On Sunday,
Haki Africa administrator Salma Hemed said the invitation is in
recognition of the group’s fight against human rights violations in the
country.
“Besides the main summit, we will also
participate in a series of other meetings through our Executive Director
Hussein Khalid,” she added.
Civil society groups will
Monday participate in the Global Youth Summit, where Mr Khalid will lead
and moderate the session on human rights and security.
PROMOTING HUMAN RIGHTS
The organisation will also take part in Tuesday’s “The Strong Cities Network” forum, which will bring together mayors from all over the world, including Mombasa County Governor Hassan Joho.

“We
will also participate in ‘The Leaders’ Summit on Countering Violent
Extremism’, which will be hosted by US President Barack Obama tomorrow”
Ms Hemed said.
The administrator said she hopes the government will equally acknowledge the organisation’s efforts and work.
“It
is our hope that the Kenyan Government will work with us to promote
human rights, security and development in the country,” she said.
During
the US leader’s visit to the country in July, MPs raised concern over
the inclusion of the banned non-governmental organisation on the list of
civil society groups that met Mr Obama
