Dar es Salaam. Consumers of petroleum products
in Tanga will pay an average of Sh14 less than their Dar es Salaam
counterparts, thanks to the former’s comparative advantage over the
latter.
Tanga charges as low as $3 per tonne of diesel
and petrol handled at the port as wharfage fee unlike Dar es Salaam port
which charges $10 to handle one tonne.
This difference
is clearly manifested in the new Cap prices of petroleum products as
published by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority
(Ewura).
In the prices published yesterday, Dar es
Salaam residents will have to pay Sh92 more to purchase a litre of
petrol as the regulator increases the price by 4.19 per cent, citing
increasing global prices.
While motorists in Dar es
Salaam will purchase a litre of petrol at Sh2,290 their counterparts in
Tanga will pay Sh2,277 per litre.
Residents in Uvinza (Lugufu) will pay the highest price of Sh2,533 per litre of petrol.
Retail prices of diesel and kerosene on the other hand have decreased by Sh18 per litre and Sh29 per litre respectively.
This
means that a litre of diesel from Wednesday is selling at Sh2,026 in
Dar es Salaam and Sh2,010 in Tanga while in Uvinza, it will cost
Sh2,269.
While the price of kerosene is Sh1,964 in Dar es Salaam and Sh2,010 in Tanga, it is Sh2,207 in Uvinza.
From
July, Tanga Port joined the port of Dar es Salaam as the point of entry
for petroleum products – imported through the Bulk Procurement System.
This necessitated Ewura to start computing prices for petroleum products
in areas surrounding Tanga basing on the costs of importing the same
via the new offloading point.
Ewura communications and
public relations manager Titus Kaguo told The Citizen that due to
limited storage capacity at Tanga Port, petroleum products offloaded at
the port are consumed within the region and its environs only.
