Lindi. The money withdrawn by a Mtama
parliamentary contestant on the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) ticket, Mr
Nape Nnauye, here yesterday that led to speculation that it was meant to
influence nomination in today’s vote turned out to be for agents.
According
to the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Lindi,
after questioning the aspirant, the anti-corruption detectives concluded
that there was nothing sinister.
Speaking to reporters
here yesterday, the PCCB boss in Lindi, Mr Stephen Chami, on rumours
that dominated social media for the better part of yesterday that the
CCM cadre had been caught while attempting to bribe delegates were
false.
Speaking to this paper yesterday, Mr Nnauye said was indeed questioned by PCCB detectives but not for many hours.
“I
was questioned for about half an hour. I explained that the money was
meant for agents. They understood and let me go,” he said.
Mr
Nnauye said he had just withdrawn Sh3.6 million from the NMB Bank when
he was approached by plainclothes PCCB detectives who asked him to
follow them to their offices and he obliged.
He said he
did not feel bad about the incident since the officers were doing their
job which is a good thing at this critical moment when some
unscrupulous politicians use money to influence vote outcome.
Mr
Nnauye who is CCM Ideology and Publicity secretary is amongst the
ruling party cadres who are vying for the Mtama legislative position
left vacant by outgoing lawmaker and Foreign Affairs and International
Cooperation minister Bernard Membe who recently announced he would not
seek re-election.
