Serengeti. Two contestants among several CCM
members who were seeking nomination as parliamentary seat candidates in
Serengeti have withdrawn from the race, citing favouritism of party
leaders towards the outgoing MP.
The CCM secretary in
Srerengeti District, Mr Paulo Mwita, confirmed to have received a letter
from the two aspirants, Dr James Wanyancha and Mr Mabenga Magonera.
He
said, the move has left Dr Stephen Kebwe, the current MP, who has been
going on with the campaign ahead of the primaries slated for today.
Addressing
journalists after handing their withdraw letter, Dr Wanyancha and Mr
Magonera, said they would not take part in election in which their
district leaders have clearly shown to favour one of the contestants.
“We
cannot take part in election which leaders have already decided who is
going to win. This is clear show of bias and sabotage. We have caught
some people with two cards in a number of wards,” said Dr Wanyancha.
Elaborating,
he pointed out that CCM has 104 branches, 30 wards and 69,897 members
in the district but a survey which has been conducted in Ngoreme
Division, home to Dr Kebwe, has revealed that there are 30,163 members,
about half of all CCM members in the district.
Dr
Wanyancha, who served as MP in the area for ten years from 2000 before
he was ousted by Dr Kebwe, said data indicate that the four wards in the
said division have more members than people who have been registered in
the permanent voters’ register.
“We found a person
(name withheld) who has two cards. He was issued one card in Busawe Ward
on July 19 and on the same date he also registered as CCM member at
Nyambunano while the deadline to register CCM members was on July 17,
this year,” he said.
When asked, the CCM secretary in the district said they were following the allegations that some members hold two cards.
