Amref Health Africa International has hired a former Nation Media Group executive, Githinji Gitahi, to head the continent’s largest health development NGO.
Dr Gitahi becomes the first Kenyan chief executive officer of the 58-year-old international organisation, whose headquarters are in Nairobi.
He takes over from Dr Lennie Kyomuhangi-Igbodipe, who has been serving as interim CEO since the retirement of Dr Teguest Guerma, who headed the organisation between 2011 and 2014.
Omari Issa, chair of Amref Health Africa’s International board, said Dr Gitahi was recruited through an extensive, competitive international search.
“Having served in the health, for-profit and non-profit sectors, Dr Gitahi brings the skills and expertise necessary to navigate Amref Health Africa through its next phase of growth and development as we seek to innovate solutions to health challenges on the African continent,” said Mr Issa.
