Tuskys Supermarkets has reopened one of its Kampala branches
that had been closed by authorities for selling rotten chicken, beef and
expired goods.
The Bwaise branch in Uganda has
re-opened its doors to the public following a one year ban from the
market by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
Tuskys chief executive officer Dan Githua however told nation.co.ke that “the branch closed last year to allow for major reorganisation and realignment to modern business requirements."
Bwaise
branch which is now fully refurbished closed in July last year when
KCCA on an impromptu visit came across rotten chicken and beef as well
as expired goods on the shelves. It was compelled to comply with health
standards before being cleared to re-open.
SECOND LARGEST RETAILER
Mr
Githua added that the branch opened its doors on Tuesday noon in
Kampala with the assistance of Uganda country manager Hassan Ali.
Tuskys
has 59 branches. Majority are in Kenya at 52 with seven in Uganda.
Tuskys is by market share, Kenya’s second largest retailer.
Tuskys
made its entry in Uganda in 2009 by buying out two supermarkets, Half
Price, Good Price which were subsidiaries of G.K.O. Medicines Limited, a
pharmaceutical company.
To date, the family-owned
retailer has seven stores located in Bugolobi, Kitintale, Makerere,
Nakulabye, Ntinda and Bwaise, around the capital city.
