A community-based organization (CBO) in Meru is set to start the
construction of a 600-kilowatt hydropower generation plant in the next
two weeks after securing financing from the Community Development
Finance Trust.
The Mt Kenya CBO, through the Mt Kenya
Power Company, is developing a small hydropower plant in the Mt Kenya
forest at a cost of Sh60 million.
Speaking at an
investment conference at Kenya Methodist University in Meru on Friday,
Mt Kenya CBO Vice-Chairman Gerald Ikunyua said the group was banking on
the forum to attract investors to generate more power.
The
CBO, with 250 members, has already finalized a power-purchasing
agreement with Kenya Power and is set to earn about Sh2 million a month.
Mr
Ikiara said the group expects to lure investors in solar energy to
produce power that will supplement the upcoming hydropower plant.
During
the conference Meru County presented plans for four small hydropower
projects with a capacity of 134 megawatts that are set for development.
The projects are estimated to cost about Sh30 billion
