The Kajiado Central by-election, KCSE examination results and the Sonko Rescue Team were among the most popular searches on Google by Kenyans last month.
The hotly contested Kajiado Central by-election, in which ODM candidate Elija Memusi emerged the winner, topped the list of most popular online searches in March, according to Google Search Trends.
The by-election took place on March 16 after former MP Joseph ole Nkaissery was appointed the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government.
Ms Laura Oyier, a singer who rose to fame after she was arrested and taken to court for failing to pay her hotel bill of over Sh230,000, came second in the list.
Ms Oyier incurred the bill at the Intercontinental Hotel, where she had been staying over the Valentine’s weekend.
Following the release of the 2014 KCSE results by Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi on March 3, Kenyans searched for “KCSE results online” to establish performance of candidates and schools — making this the third most searched item on Google.
EL CLASSICO
El Classico, the name given in football to any match between rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, was the fourth trending search in March.
Barcelona won 2-1 in the March 22 match.
Football fans also heavily searched for English Premier League match between Liverpool and Swansea, which ended in a 1-0 score, as well as Royal Kenya Bet, a sports betting site.
The Sonko Rescue Team, an initiative by Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko Mbuvi, designed to enhance service delivery to city residents, attracted many people online, at the seventh spot.
Mzee Ojwang’, a renowned comedian of the Vitimbi fame, also made it to the top trending searches of Google last month.
Mzee Ojwang’, whose real name is Benson Wanjau, 77, came into the limelight in March after he was admitted to Lions Sightfirst Eye Hospital where he was diagnosed with partial blindness.
