Dar es Salaam. The construction of the
long-awaited Tazara flyover is expected to start mid this year following
a series of discussion between Japan and Tanzania.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica)
chief representative in Tanzania, Mr Toshio Nagase, said the delay in
kicking off the project was a result of failure to agree on how to
divide the contract and manage risks.

“We are now planning to adopt and follow Fidic
[International Federation of Consulting Engineers] procedures. We hope
they will solve the complications encountered earlier, thus enable the
project to kick off mid this year,” said Mr Nagase in an interview when
Jica was handing over two surveillance vehicles to the Tanzania Revenue
Authority.
Mid last year, contractors were seen working on
the site. Among the things they were removing were pipelines that were
near Tazara offices.
Many city residents have been waiting for the
construction of the flyover. Jica experts approved a detailed design for
the project, paving the way for procurement to proceed.
Nyerere Road is the only major road providing
direct access to the international airport. On the both sides of the
road are major factories.
Nelson Mandela Expressway is of pronounced
importance as a corridor of seaport cargo movement to inland areas and
an international corridor for transit trade to Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda,
DR Congo, Zambia and Malawi.
