RSSB meeting housing needs through provision of decent and affordable houses

Suzan Orman, an American author and motivation speaker once said that owning a home is a key stone of wealth-both financial affluence and emotional security. She couldn’t have put it any better. Owning a home is everyone’s dream but to many it has remained just a dream in the pipeline.

But if recent efforts by the Rwanda Social Security Board and other partners go by, residents of Kigali City could finally achieve their dreams of owning and living in decent and affordable houses.
Currently, there is a memorandum of understanding between RSSB, Ministry of Infrastructure, Kigali City Council, Ministry of Defense to avail enough and affordable houses to all people.
As a result of these combined efforts, recently the Basinda II housing project was launched as one of the five housing projects. Construction of 609 units has started, this is expected to ease the housing problem in the city.
Other projects are Rugarama (2,743 units), Ziniya Pilot Project (128 units), Ndera Affordable Housing Project (2000 units), and Kanombe Affordable Housing Project (2,000 units).
Because affordability is a critical target, negotiations are still going on between the technical departments of RSSB to avail housing units in Batsinda II at affordable prices that will range between Rwf 20-30 million.
The first but most important step is that, the project launched by Infrastructure Minister James Musoni puts into consideration of all factors such as the social economic status.
While launching, the Minister called on Rwandans to embrace high density housing for effective use of infrastructure investments and optimum use of the limited land resources.
