Sierra Leonean 'drug trafficker' shot dead

By Karama Kenyunko
Prisons wardens move to retrieve the body of Sierra Leonean drug trafficking suspect Abdul Koroma from the barbed wire fence at the Kisutu Resident Magistrates Court in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
A Prison guard yesterday shot dead a Sierra Leone national, Abdul Koroma (33), allegedly trying to escape from the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam.

Koroma was waiting for trial in a case of trafficking in narcotic drugs worth 61,482,500/-.

Before the incident, the suspect requested the prison guard to escort him to the wash room, a request which was granted.
As he was in the toilet, however, he removed his trousers, broke the window glass and jumped out with only his shorts.

Fortunately, prison officers who were waiting for him outside saw him and immediately apprehended him. However, the suspect slipped from the guards and  ran away, climbed the Kisutu fence in an attempt to escape.

Again one of the Kisutu court security guards got hold of his leg to prevent him from escaping  but failed.
The prison officers also scared him by firing shots in the air twice but could not help.

Seeing that Koroma was determined to escape, one of the officers shot him in the armpit but the bullet penetrated his head according to a prison officer, who did not want his name to be mentioned since he is not the Prisons department spokesperson.

Koroma was arrested on December 2, 2013 at the Julius Nyerere International Airport for allegedly trafficking 1226.65 grammes of narcotic drugs worth 61,482,500/-.

Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Dar es Salaam Special Zone Commander Suleiman Kova said the incident occurred in the morning.

“The accused attempted to escape from police hands by jumping the fence, a move that prompted the police to shot him right away,” he said.

Kova added however that the police were still investigating the incident.

As we were going to press, information from the Public Relations Officer of Muhimbili National Hospital, Doris Ishenda, had it that the suspect was pronounced dead upon arrival at the national hospital.
