Abdallah Rashid (C), secretary of a group of Dar
es Salaam-based Tegeta Wazo Hill garage operators and mechanics, briefs
Chadema secretary general Dr Wilbroad Slaa (R) yesterday.
Dr Wilbroad Slaa, the party’s Secretary General issued the advice
yesterday when speaking during a meeting to thank the public for
voting-in nominated members of the coalition of people's constitution
(UKAWA) in the just ended civic elections in the country.
Dr Slaa’s call follows increasing threat by an investor wanting to
evict small and medium entrepreneurs who had developed a workshop
garage at Tegeta Magereji on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam.
The dispute has resulted into the group expenditure of over 70m/- to run a case at the High Court’s Land Division.
According to the politician, there was no need for the government
to continue nursing investors who don't pay attention to the national
interests but only their own.
“This is another escrow scandal in Tegeta,” he said calling on
President Jakaya Kikwete and his government officials to protect the
interests of the people.
Dr Slaa further cited other ongoing killings across the country
saying it is a result of government failure to make proper decision in
awarding investors the opportunity to do business in the country.
Giving details on the land dispute in Tegeta Magereji, the
outspoken Secretary General identified that preliminary findings on the
High Court Land Division case had different names contrary to the
registered land title at the Business Registration and Licencing Agency
(BRELA).
But, the Secretary General however informed that he would devote
all required advocates from the party who will be led by Senior advocate
Mabere Marando to ensure the group retains their land portion.
“I have been told that the advocate will be arriving tomorrow
(today) to start working on the matter. He will be joined by other three
advocates and we will increase the number of advocates as much as
needed to ensure justice is done for Tegeta Magereji residents,” he
said.
In addition, Slaa expressed dismay over the Regional and District
Commissioners Said Meck Sadiki and Jordan Lugimbana respectively for not
taking serious measures to address the conflict.
He however warned elected Chadema chairmen against displaying party
symbols such as flags when addressing government issues to avoid
conflicts.
Speaking on the dispute at the political rally, Madale Chairman
Gerecian Mberwa explained that the youth who were legally given the land
In 2006 are embroiled in a land conflict with the investor since 2008.
Mberwa who is also Assistant Secretary for the association of
garage operators said the yard had assets worth 35bn/- offering direct
and indirect training and employment to hundreds of people.
“This area was given to youth who were drawn from various corners
of Kinondoni municipality and specifically those who operated garages …
It sounds strange that the same authority that gaveout the land had
moved against the people,” he claimed.
There has been controversy behind ownership of this potion of land.
While it was agreed that the land be equally divided to garage
operators, there has been pressures from the aforementioned investor to
evict the youth who were given the land legally for their
entrepreneurial undertakings.
“We want intervention from other parties … Youth at Tegeta Magereji
are suffering, they have no assurance of their long-time investments,”
he stressed.
