Dr Shein: Zanzibar serious on ending youth unemployment

Zanzibar President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein has reiterated  government’s determination  to end youth unemployment problems which he said has become global problem now.
He said last year about 73.4 percent of the youths globally had no jobs.
 
“Unemployment is a global problem, we are however  working to create job opportunities for youths in the Isles,”  the President said  in his New Year message to ‘wananchi’ that was released to the media yesterday.
 
Dr  Shein noted that the global statistics show an increase of 3.5 percent compared to 2007 records. He said despite technological and industrial developments in most of the European countries, more than 30 percent of their youths are unemployed. He said in some countries the problem is even bigger compared to other African countries.
 
He said a household survey conducted in 2009/2010 in Zanzibar showed that 17 percent of youths aged between 15 and 24 years have no jobs. He said the government has established a special fund that will deal with enabling youths to get employment.
 
He however called upon  residents  to fully participate in the coming referendum for the proposed constitution and general elections. He said apart from elections the government shall also complete implementation of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals.
 
The President expressed dismay over increased violence against women calling upon Isles residents to support  government’s efforts in fighting against various forms of gender based violence (GBV).
