Although agriculture is one of the most important sectors in the Rwandan economy, it entails a range of difficulties. However, there is a solution to every challenge. And technology is one such solution.
That is why farmers are being encouraged to adopt technology that suits their farm and Retronics Ltd is one of the companies spearheading this digital migration.

About Retronics Ltd
Retronics designs and develops equipment and technologies that increase productivity and eradicate losses in the whole agriculture value chain. With a vision and mission to use ICT to change farmers’ lives and make their sector more lucrative, the start-up strived to introduce highly innovative and effective solutions in agriculture sector.
Their products
Hilary Miramira, the managing director, introduces their recent innovation of an egg incubator which aims to increase poultry productivity.
“We made a solar and grid-run portable egg incubator that gives eggs all conducive features to increase their chances of hatching and boost productivity,” he said
The egg incubation system consists of a power supply unit, an energy storage unit and the egg incubation chamber.
The incubator is capable of handling up to 42 eggs per batch of incubation. However, the designers say the capacity varies depending on the customer’s preferred size.
Another one of their interesting products is the fertilizer logic device which is designed to help you balance your plant’s nutritional needs and provide recommendations on how to make sure your plants grow well.
Fertilizer Logic is an electronic device that determines the fertility content of the soil by using nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and pH sensors. The system is connected to this mobile device to provide real time data and information in a very short time through sms and web applications. A farmer is able to tell how much fertilizer is necessary for his crops without burden.
Challenges
Prince Iradukunda, the CTO, says the dreams of Retronics are bigger than what is going on right now but investment is still a challenge.
“We are investing a lot of our time in building our skills and with investment. We shall move ahead really quickly,” he said.
Much as developments to boost agriculture are going on, farmers should obtain certain levels of education that are associated with their farming activity, and have a willingness to learn new technologies. In addition, well-organized mass media and responsible bodies can play an important role via advertisement in order to embolden technology adoption among farmers
