President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed former police
officer Joseph Boinett as the new the new Inspector General (IG) of
police to replace David Kimaiyo.
Mr Boinett is a career policeman who joined the intelligence
service in 1998 and has two Master's degrees, one in security
management and another in diplomacy and has just completed a course in
Security Policy Analysis from Australia. The government, through the
ministry of interior, said Mr Boinett is currently a high ranking
intelligence officer with national Intelligence Service (NIS).
The new nominee has also served in the Kenyan
missions in Harare and Rome as a desk officer & was later seconded
to foreign affairs as head of protocol.
Deputy Inspector General Samuel Arachi has been
appointed the acting IG for the time being as Mr Boinett’s appointment
awaits the approval of the parliament.
The 2010 constitution, which created the position
of the IG states that “the president shall appoint the Inspector General
of police with the approval of the parliament.
Former IG Mr Kimaiyo, who quitted the job citing
that he had opted for an early retirement, has been appointed the
chairman of the Kenya Airports Authority.
