Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Council of
Governors Chairman Isaac Ruto have indicated plans to consolidate the
Okoa Kenya and Pesa Mashinani referendum bids.
The two
leaders said there was no need to go to the referendum divided since
their respective campaigns were aimed at devolving more funds to
counties.
They spoke at Bangale Secondary School in Tana River County on Saturday.
The
Wiper boss said counties should be made stronger by providing them with
more funds. This is the only way to solve the country’s problems, he
added.
“Both governors and Cord leaders know the issues
that bedevil this country. There’s a need for us to engage in talks so
that we don’t go to the referendum divided,” he said.
The
Cord co-principal praised the planned meeting between the Senate and
the Judiciary, saying this is bound to bring harmony between the two
institutions, resulting in the success of devolution.
Mr
Ruto, who is also the Bomet Governor, said the issues being pushed for
by proponents of both the Okoa Kenya and Pesa Mashinani referendum
drives are the same.
He said there is a need for consensus to achieve the intended goal.
“Our
interests are the same — to ensure that we improve the lives of Kenyans
at the grassroots. This is why we must negotiate and make sure that
devolution works,” he said.
