Working parents urged to make use of day care centres
Working mothers with babies have been advised to make use of day care centres to overcome challenges of hiring house-helps.
The call has been made by Mrs Sylvia Mugambi, the director of Kanna Holistic Day Care Centre in Meru Town.
She
said the emerging trend where house-helps molest children or abandon
them after parents have left for work is worrying, especially for
mothers who work throughout the day.
She noted that bringing up a baby in a town can be challenging as most children remain in the house throughout the day.
This denies them time to play, know their environment and interact with other children.
“Most
mothers come to us after they are frustrated by house-helps who wake up
one morning and announce that they are resigning from the job.
“Taking
a child to a day care centre comes with many added advantages. The
child will be handled by professionals, learn, play and socialise with
others besides feeding well,” Mrs Mugambi said.
CHILDREN WHO CANNOT WALK
She
cited incidences where parents have brought to her children of up to
nine months who cannot walk due to being restricted to the house but
gained momentum within a short time of being at the centre.
“We
have seen incidences in the media where house-helps have tortured and
caused physical harm to small children. Here we get into an agreement
with the parent and the child’s safety, health and welfare is assured.
We receive babies as young as three months old,” she said.
Mrs
Mugambi also advised parents to ensure that the institutions where they
leave their children during the day are known and duly registered by
the government.
Recently, Kenyans were shocked to see a Ugandan house-help caught on camera savagely torturing a one-and-half-year-old child
